| What could go wrong after three perfect weeks together? Zaccaria Angelino went off to war believing he'd return home to marry Samantha Fairchild. Things don't always go as planned. He didn't plan to see some of his best friends die or to lose an eye. Three years later they're thrown back together again because Sam's life is in danger. He's the last person she'd chose for a protector but, again, we can't always chose our circumstances. Sam didn't want to see a person killed either. Now she's running for her life and has to depend on Zach.
Roxanne St. Claire builds some excruciating suspense in this one. The love story isn't shabby either as Zach and Samantha have to come to terms with another. The characters are believable and built strongly enough that the reader may have trouble deciding which of them is right or wrong in decisions they make. Maybe too often we don't have to choose, the good guys are just good. This is a great twist that I like. One of the most likeable players in the book is Vivi Angelino, Zach's twin sister. She brings spunk, humor, and an outrageous way that makes scenarios with her special. Ms. St. Claire is able to use some misdirection that keeps us guessing about the real villains throughout. That makes it more fun for me as a reader. This author keeps the pace racing and the characters acting in ways that make them human and believable. I like her style. Combining suspense with bits of humor is a winner with me. This is one of those books that will probably make the reader a fan of Ms. St. Claire. I already was but this just keeps me seeking her work out.
