Mayati has not been a nice person. Numerous affairs, greed that has destroyed her father-in-law's business, treating servants like dirt, the list against her is a long one. It was easy for people to believe she may have killed the husband of her best friend. Her husband Khaemhat knows she didn't do it. The wife of the dead man knows. Now Mayati has to show others that she isn't the same person she once was.

Jennifer Mueller has built an excellent tale of a good woman, abused and then killed by her husband in another time whose soul is sent back to ancient Egypt to inhabit Mayati's body. I really like the way this story tell us that the gods may have a way of making up for a lifetime of suffering for anyone who tries to be the best they can be. It's done in such an entertaining way that the reader doesn't have to look for the message, can just enjoy the relationship between Khaemhat and Victoria/Mayati. Or enjoy the fact that her behavior has already proved to many around her that she's not the same Mayati they used to know.

Great details of history, bits of humor, interactions between the characters and a well crafted storyline make this one of those books you'll want to read without being interrupted by the mundane things in life!
