Tienan is a genetically and technologically enhanced assassin on the run from the lab that created him and the Ruling Council that wants to exterminate him. Forced to hide outside the Gate in the ruined and lawless land, his only goal is to survive attempts on his life and destroy his former masters.

Silence, while on the trail of the dangerous newcomer, suddenly realises that she has become the hunted. Captured, she’s unwilling drawn to Tienan and they are soon mutually captivated but treachery and mistrust threaten to tear the two lovers apart forever.

This is the first installation of the new Project Alpha series and we are certainly off to an extremely exhilarating start of a new series. Walters has created a near-future where Earth is polluted to the point where untainted air is a luxury for the privileged and life is unrelentingly bleak for the unfortunate exiled to live outside the Gate. World-building is always a difficult necessity for a new fantasy series and I felt that the pacing was slightly off at the start of the story as the author introduced the protagonists and the world they lived in. However, after the somewhat compromised start, we are soon thrust into action as the hero and heroine finally meet and from that point on the plot moved quickly.

Tienan was everything we love in a hero- tough, sexy, ever-so-dangerous and absolutely entranced by the heroine. He was a strong character with unexpected emotional vulnerabilities especially in regards to the heroine that was very touching and added much to his characterisation. Silence was also a wonderful character that was well-rounded and did her part to carry the story and move the plot. The chemistry and sexual connection between the protagonists founded a good foundation for their growing relationship and was absolutely scorching.

A great start to a promising new series!
