This book is combination of two of the three books in this author's Adrien English Mystery series. In Fatal Shadows Adrien's friend since High School, Robert Hersey, is brutally murdered. The only clue anyone has to go on is a chess piece left in the victim's hand. In his inimitable way Adrien gets himself in hot water over and over again as he tries to find the killer. This is a great mystery that keeps us guessing throughout as the bodies keep piling up. Excellent characters and the self deprecating humor that seems to be a staple in Josh Lanyon's tales make this a really enjoyable read.

The next book A Dangerous Thing, takes us away from the city to the ranch left to Adrien at the age of eight by his grandmother. Wouldn't you know it? Adrien hasn't been there for twenty four years but his first night back he stumbles on a dead man in the yard of the ranch. By the time he gets the police there the body has disappeared. A group of archeologists, Indian lore, a stagecoach robbery from the nineteenth century blend together to give us a lot of suspects. Detective Riordan who sparred with Adrien in the first of these two books has followed him to the ranch. When they're not dodging bullets or disagreeing about how to work the case they explore building a relationship.

Both of these stories combine humor, suspense, frequent surprises and a little romance to make them fast moving and fun. Josh Lanyon knows how to weave a mystery that reaches out and pulls us in. Both of these tales get me emotionally involved. Sometimes I'd like to just tell the inept officers of the law what I think of them when they're running down Adrien or being especially obtuse about something. I think any mystery fan will get a lot of enjoyment from these books.
