| Cassie Pierce has her life in order. She is working on her
degree by being a docent at a historical Virginian estate named Eagle's
Aerie. The estate has had rumors of ghosts, but Cassie never expected to
come upon a ghostly duel between two men. She dismisses the vision and goes
back to her skeptic ways. A witch named Maigret introduces herself to Cassie
and tells her that there is a dark, ominous shadow in Cassie’s future.
Unable to believe Maigret but unwilling to be totally rude to her, Cassie
befriends her. Dreams of one of the men in the ghostly duel begin to overrun
into the day when she sees the ghost of Reid Phillips over and over again.
Could it all be real?
Reid Phillips has existed in a limbo world for 200 years ever since the day he was killed trying to defend his honor in the 1700’s. Every night he has been cursed to replay his death-duel with the same outcome, and no living person has ever seen him- until Cassie that is. Reid knows that there is a bond between their souls, and when she throws herself into the duel one night intent on saving him, his unworldly existence changes. But the two of them are still cursed by the blackness of Reid’s killer, who is now on the loose. Will they destroy the evil that now walks the earth? What will happen to Reid when his revenge is final? Can Reid and Cassie keep each other safe? Ms. Huxman weaves an enchanting tale of a love that can transcend the ghostly boundaries of death and time. Reid is beautifully portrayed; he walks and talks with the air of an 18th century nobleman. His transformation into a 21st century man was wonderfully conveyed. Cassie is pragmatic and skeptical but somehow has an open mind. The characters seem to be able to walk right off the pages and into your hearts. This is a very entertaining book.
