Vic Davis is used to the city streets of Ontario but finds himself settling in to the small town of Passion as the Royal Canadian Mounted officer in charge of law enforcement. A year ago his affair with a married woman ended in her death when her husband put a hit on him but she was killed. Now the victim’s sister, Julia Wilson, wants answers. It’s no hardship entering into a relationship with Vic to find them. Until she feels herself falling in love. The man who sent her to kill Vic, Marshall Kent, wants the job done and is determined it will be. No matter who stands in the way.

Shiela Stewart again pens an intriguing suspense with the kind of relationships among the characters that keep the story moving. When we’re not deep in mystery we’re enjoying the camaraderie that exists among the players. Tom Healy and his pregnant wife Cassie are often stars of the book that hold our interest. Max, Millie, and others in law enforcement are part of a great supporting cast. Sometimes funny, often protective, the secondary characters help make the story work.

Marshall Kent is one of those villains easy to detest as the things he does get to be more and more over the line, even for a bad guy. The usual villains in a town like Passion make it seem almost like the Canadian version of Mayberry with the town drunks, kids throwing snowballs, and teenagers fighting over a girl. Vic seems to handle them all with the same kind of aplomb as Sheriff Andy would have.

I adore the way Ms. Stewart is able to mix realistic relationships, small town living and edge-of-the-seat supense into an a book that’s a joy to read.
