Vita was a witch princess in the kingdom of Traveticca, who needs a man's essence to get magical power and survive. To do so, each princess must keep up to twelve vessels to fulfill their needs. When they marry and become queen, they will pick from their vessels for a worthy mate. Vita is next in line for the throne, and her sister Lancine is extremely jealous and feels the crown should be hers. When Vita finally picks her mate, she knows she's chosen well. Bron is a good man, who will love her forever. This means that Lancine's time to take the throne is getting short, and she is getting desperate. Will Vita and Bron be able to go through the joining ceremony? Or will Lancine be able to stop them?

The Essence of Magic is an entertaining view of a magical world that needs magic to survive and prosper. Vita seems like a genuinely nice person, who is shocked that her sister could behave the way she does. I found it a little hard to believe that she didn't know Lancine was a problem, but sometimes you can't see what's in front of your face. Bron initially comes off as a little weak, but as the story moves on he becomes a person in his own right. There was a lot of sex in the story, but because of the very nature of the witches, it sometimes seemed a little mechanical. After all, it was just food, right? I did enjoy reading the story, and will look for other books by Paris Dixon.
