Lilly's best friend is a highly paid escort, and the latest contract at her company is for twelve girls at a party. But one girl dropped out, and Glory manages to convince Lilly to take her place, no sex involved, mostly by the rather large amount of money Lilly will be paid. But at the party, while out in the garden for a breather, Lilly runs into a sinfully handsome man, Gabe, who mistakes her for one of the regular girls. Lilly's terrified of sex with men after the disaster of her first and last relationship, in which she was terribly abused. Yet Gabe arouses her passion, and manages to get her on his lap long enough to show her what she was missing. She runs before he can go further, locking him outside. He tries to find her through an investigator, but has no luck. He goes ahead and proposes marriage to his high-society girlfriend, Amanda, despite many misgivings.

Four months later, she's hired by a powerful and rich man to do a painting of his son's Montana ranch for a magazine article. He had her investigated, so he knows her background, and is insistent that she stay on the ranch while painting, using his charge card when needed. But she refuses to be further indebted to him, and instead goes to the ranch with the bare minimum items she could salvage from her own belongings. She shows up on the ranch, only to find that George Abendstern's son is none other than the man she met at the party four months ago, Gabe.

Evening Star read a bit like a Diana Palmer book, though Gabe was much more understanding than many of Ms. Palmer's heroes. It was a contemporary romance started off with conflict between the hero and heroine over misunderstandings and past problems, with a large part of the setting occurring on a ranch. Though Gabe was initially judgmental and angry, he soon realized, on his own, that Lilly wasn't all that she seemed. Lilly was also rather interesting, as she didn't reveal her past to Gabe as I'd have expected. She ran from him at first, afraid of what she felt while near him, but once she stopped running, she was a rather strong, stubborn heroine. Perhaps even more stubborn than Gabe. The love making between them was genuine and passionate, and it never seemed repetitive. The developing romance between them was interesting to watch, though I wished there had been more serious conversation between them.
