| Zoe Alexander is not having a good time. Her rent is overdue and tips are very few. When she suddenly has a fortuitous chance at a mystery experiment, she is stunned to find within the package deal, seven fragments of fifty-dollar bills, and the other half of the bills to be exchanged when she is at the preliminary meeting. After arriving, at the location, she learns the study is one that requires sexual feedback. The Doctor, a very wealthy man, one that is a serious and dedicated student of psychology and human nature, keeps his identity undercover, only being referred to as the Doctor, while he conducts the experiments. He makes sure to keep the room completely dark so his face cannot be seen and he stays in the shadows. There under false pretences, his study is to establish sexual values, but his motives are much more personal. Zoe is drawn to the temptation of the money, aware it will help her pressing money matters. Knowing she can leave at any time, she is reluctant to stay when asked to remove her clothes, but when the money becomes more interesting, she reconsiders. Shy, at first, she gives in to the research not realizing how electric the sessions will become. Now she must follow her heart to see if she is truly has sensations for the Doctor or is this just a passing fantasy.
The Experiment is a unique way of learning about the ins and outs of sexuality as The Doctor seeks his own experimentation persuasion research. Zoe is torn with desiring to learn more, even though she needs income to help pay the bills, to being curious. When she and The Doctor are in the room alone, there is a certain chemistry that smothers. Mr. Mabeuse draws characters together that appear quite believable in their actions, with a touch of intrigue. With some stimulating situations and romantic measures, the story starts like a tiny amount of electricity that heats up gradually with each turn of the pages.
