Sophie and Thomas work in the same building and Sophie has admired Tom for several years. They haven't been formally introduced but they both know who the other is and what they do for a living. Sophie goes on vacation at her parent's lake house and is surprised to find a beaten up Tom on the dock. He is obviously suffering physically but mentally he is having problems also. Sophie knows he needs help but neither realize the full extent of the danger that is right around the corner.

The opening paragraph sets the stage for the book. It's extremely emotional, full of suspense and sets up the volatile explosive relationship between Sophie and Tom. Sophie is a smart career woman with no idea of her appeal to the opposite sex. That seems to be Tom's attraction to her. He has so many negative aspects in his life that Sophie's innate goodness draws him to her. His feelings are jumbled yet with Sophie he can be himself and feel safe. His dominant personality manifests itself with their erotic sex. The encounters between them were numerous, explosive, and somewhat repetitive. I would have enjoyed a little less sex and a little more character and plot development. I found myself confused at times with the plot and losing interest in the story. The ending of the book resolved some of the questions I had. Also I found myself liking Tom's character better after it was revealed what caused his problems in the first place. Overall the author crafted the story very well.
