Ruthie Chason is stuck in a bad marriage to an extremely controlling man. So, when the opportunity to take their children and escape from him comes along, she takes it. She also takes journals that contain evidence of his illegal activity as a way of ensuring her freedom. Chris Parker is a Sherriff's Deputy her brother Tick calls in to help keep her safe after she shows up on his doorstep. Though Chris is drawn to Ruthie and wants to keep her safe, past experiences make him cautious about giving in to his feelings for her.

Both Chris and Ruthie are wonderful characters. Ruthie's determination to take her children and get away from a bad situation immediately drew me in. The incredible amount of bravery that decision took made me cheer for her throughout the book. Her resolve to create a new, happy life for herself and her children leads her to give in to her feelings for Chris. He treats her with so much tenderness and caring that it made me fall for him a bit too. But it's not just the way he treats Ruthie that makes him so fantastic. His genuine affection for her children, apparent in all of his interactions with them, proves how perfect they are for each other.

However, I felt slightly cheated while I read the book. Instead of focusing mostly on the relationship between Chris and Ruthie, the story jumps frequently to FBI Agents Harrell Beecham and Jennifer Settles and their own burgeoning relationship. It almost felt like the book was as much theirs as Chris and Ruthie's, which wouldn't have been a problem for me if there had been any mention of them in the blurb. And while I enjoyed the secondary story line between Harrell and Jennifer, I found myself wishing there had been a little less of them and more of Chris and Ruthie.
