Our story begins in England in the year 1880 at Castle Langley. Lysette Percell is an orphan who is taken in by Mrs. Langley as a servant. Mrs. Langley had searched a long time for Lysette; she is her granddaughter. Mrs. Langley brought Lysette to Langley Castle to protect her. Lysette had no idea that Janet Langley was her mother, or that she had been murdered. Lysette grew up believing that her mother had run off abandoning both her and her father. Mrs. Langley was afraid the same would happen to Lysette if she were found out; her children were a greedy bunch.

Lysette was having another sleepless night, so she went to check on Mrs. Langley. They had become very close since she had been there. Mrs. Langley is dying, and she reveals the truth to Lysette, including the fact that she thought one of her own children was responsible for the murder of her mother. She gave Lysette a scrap of cloth that had been found at the scene of the crime. Mrs. Langley was sure it would lead to the killer. She asks Lysette to find the killer so her mother could finely rest in peace.

Mrs. Langley dies and her son Albert accuses Lysette of murdering her and calls in Scotland Yard. Inspector Cedric Insly arrives at the castle to investigate the crime. The medical report showed that Mrs. Langley had been poisoned and Lysette was the prime suspect. Inspector Insly had found Lysette’s brooch clutched in the dead woman’s hand. Things really look bad for Lysette when the will is read and everyone finds out that she’s the sole heir.

This was a very delightful story and I enjoyed it very much. Lysette has spent her entire life being a servant to the upper class then in one night her entire world changes. Inspector Cedric Insly, a devout bachelor, takes one look at Lysette and knew his life would never be the same again. Jessica H. Davies book is a refreshing and inspiring story. Personally what I enjoyed most about this story is I felt a kinship with Lysette. She is a good example of how strong a woman can be, both in body and spirit. Ms. Davies story line kept me completely interested as I tried to solve the murder myself I love a good who done it and suspense story. Cedric is the typical English Gentleman, but inside he apposes many of the discretions his piers indulged in. He saw the abuse they delivered to the lesser fortuna! te and it was not to his liking. But my favorite character would be Banton. You never know just whose side he’s on a very interesting personality. You will be surprised to learn his role in Lysette’s life. For light reading that will lift your spirit I recommend you read Fading Crimson. Enjoy!
