| Goddard Fluey loves being king of his home no matter how he has to win the title. That¢s the way he was raised and that¢s the way he lives. Spartan Fluey is really no match for him. With little support from any source she spends thirty years of her life at his beck and call. When all of the things missing in her life finally take their toll she enlists the help of an escort agency to find a man who will treat her as she wants to be treated.
Kris Condi gives us a sad story of a loveless marriage while offering many contrasting relationships as a comparison. Goddard is not only macho, he carries it to the point of being sadistic and truly evil. No lie is too vile, no deceit outside the realm of possibility for this man who will try to manipulate any situation to his benefit. Somehow Spartan lives up to her name and survives most of her life in the relationship. Her sparks of humanity, turning the other cheek, and real goodness manage to survive all of the machinations of her husband. Even when a chance of love in middle age is taken away she doesn¢t succumb to a pity party. She just keeps going and being a good person The author uses almost no dialogue but the story still moves quickly as told through the eyes of both Spartan and Goddard. It¢s a relief when Goddard finally gets a little of his just desserts even though many readers, like me, may feel like it¢s nothing compared to what he has coming! The tale is a fascinating journey through the plight of one relationship leaving the reader astounded that anyone could go through so much and maintain a good attitude.
