| Lady Sydney Hathwell was in trouble—it was ten days after the end of her 1-year and 1-day mourning period; her she was in New York in 1890—not exactly where her heart told her she should be. Her chaperone, Aunt Serena Hathwell, wanted to return to Europe; Sydney did not. Her father had wanted her to travel to America to see if she and Rexall Hume would “fit” for marriage; both women knew that Sydney could do better than Rexall!
Sydney had an Uncle Fuller Johnson, who lived in Gooding, Texas, who was thrilled to hear from her. The only problem was that he thought she was a he! He told her he had no use for women on his ranch—so, she became Lord Sydney Hathwell, nephew to Uncle Fuller. When she arrived, her uncle was out of town getting treatment for his arthritis pain; she had to deal with his partner, Timothy Creighton, who was temporarily totally in charge of the ranch called Forsaken. Can you imagine where the Fancy Pants came from? Ms. Cathy Marie Hake has written a great story about a young woman who lived in wealth and prosperity until she came to America to make her new life. She has created characters that seem real and endearing who also live a life which is a testimony to God. “Big Tim” Creighton lost his wife and son years ago to illness—he has never gotten over the loss and has no desire to marry again. The family on the next ranch has all daughters—no sons. The Richardson girls are known throughout Gooding as men chasers. Their actions are comical and endearing! Ms. Hake has written a complex story which is attention-grabbing and not only tells the story of Lord Syd, but also conveys the story of God’s love. It tells the Plan of Salvation without being preachy. I love the way the author explores the temperaments and personalities of these people in an endearing way. This isn’t my first book by Ms. Hake, nor will it be my last. It’s a great read!
