| Annie Smith is first embarrassed then relieved when her latest beating from her foster father is interrupted by Lord Hayward, who has been sent by a mysterious benefactor to take her to a new life in London. Once there, she's determined to discover the identities of the parents who abandoned her and left her to make her own way in the world.
Lord Harry himself has just inherited his impoverished barony, along with his late uncle's scheming wife. The last thing he expects is to find the young lady he is sent to fetch bent over a desk with her petticoats over her head. He is both appalled and a bit aroused by the sight. The Fetching Foundling is a delightful erotic romance set in Victorian England. Ms. Winn sets the scene with the dramatic Crystal Palace as an enchanting backdrop to the love story between these two unlikely lovers. It is an intriguing time and place, which she uses to full effect. The author is able to make the romance plausible, with the appealing main characters dancing around one another despite their immediate attraction. The debauchery of the villainous Count Coquard adds to the suspense, tricking Annie into a situation from which she may not emerge intact. The other minor characters, servants and relations alike, are well developed in the background for Annie and Lord Harry. I would have liked to see a couple of plot points resolved differently, particularly concerning the family jewels, but as in life not all things go as we would have them and Ms. Winn's resolutions were, I'm sure, more true to life than my wishes, and not at all predictable. The Fetching Foundling is a thoroughly enjoyable read with exciting love scenes. In a historical time known for its prudishness, the main characters of this story have no such problems. This is a great book for anyone who enjoys historical romance with erotic appeal.
