| Michael McDowell finds a mysterious, obviously antique, book on his doorstep. In its antiquated language the book relates the story of the White King and the Dark King, each of which rule over legions of vampires. Studying the tale at his neighborhood bar, Michael finds himself becoming immune to the alcohol, the pretty women, and the taunts of his friends. All he is interested in now is thinking about the vampires he's reading of, especially one female vampire whom he can practically envision before him.
Michael's also feeling the pull of a desire that goes beyond just one-night stands. Walking home, he hears sounds of a fight from a nearby alley and finds a man fighting with a petite woman much like the female vampire his imagination has rendered. When she is knocked out, he feels so remorseful; as he bends over to check her condition, she speaks to him in his mind. It's as if a door has actually opened for Michael, into another realm beyond the dull ordinariness of three-dimensional living. Boring routine is ending for Michael. Now he will be compelled to defend his newfound vampire from those entities determined to destroy her, and he will find himself channeling the White King. This wonderful short story reads like a vampire novel cloaked in fantasy: from the beginning the reader will be rooting for that dimensional door to open up and allow Michael into an entirely new universe with otherworldly beings, where he gains new magical powers and journeys on his essential Quest. Instead of rescuing a Princess, he tries to save a vampiress. I highly recommend this, and will seek out other stories by this talented author.
