Brendon Morgan and Kathleen (Kat) Warner grew up together in the small town of Clayton, MO. When Brendon returns home in 1850 as the new local doctor, he and Kathleen gradually discover their friendship has blossomed into love. As they work side by side in the clinic Brendon sets up in town, their joy is marred by repeated threats on Kat's life and a horrible cholera epidemic.

The novel includes some interesting touches of inspirational messages and a hint of the paranormal in the way each of them senses the other. It is handled very well and woven through in a subtle way that leaves the reader feeling good. The relationship between Kat and her grandfather is a wonderful side story that made me think back fondly to my own grandfather.

This short historical novel weaves intrigue throughout the story as you try to discover the would-be killer's identity. Ms. Dartt keeps you guessing right up to the end. This novel is a quick read with an underlying sweet tone.
