| Cassie’s friend Angelina is in love. Being in love, she
wants to fix Cassie up so she can be in love, too.
Angelina’s fellow, Paco, suffers from the same delusion
that his buddy Mike would be happier and easier to get along
with if only he’d agree to be fixed up with Angelina’s
friend. Finally, Cassie and Mike give in, agreeing to a
blind date, even though both feel distinctly inferior and
close to worthless. Something clicks almost instantly when
they realize they’re good at conversation with each other.
So good at it that they keep having more of it.
Mike is in debt past his ears from an ex-girlfriend who wanted to be a model and left him with $40,000-plus in bills. Since he’d sold everything he could, all he owns fits into and on top of his old rickety vehicle when his landlord locks him out and throws his belongings into the yard. Cassie’s ex-husband drives a new Mercedes but doesn’t bother to pay child support for his two sons. Luckily, the boys love macaroni and cheese, but one needs braces. What could be more natural than for Cassie to rent the room above the garage to Mike? After all, they’re friends. Following the saga of Angelina and Paco, intertwined with Cassie and Mike and her boys, Cynthianna Appel’s The Fixer-Uppers leads the reader through an uplifting dose of what real life could be like. Her sort of real life is laced with humor, old pain, hope, new and recurring issues, love, families that pass along expectations through the generations, and friendship. Somehow the happy ending feels just right.
