| Vaughn Wardell, Viscount Rothmere, had planned to spend his days at
Kirkaldy, the one place where he had been happy as a child and never return
to the coldness of his father's home, Fairleigh Hall. Kirkaldy was just a
small hunting lodge, but it had been a safe haven for Vaughn and his mother.
Away from Rufus, Vaughn's ruthless father, their days had been happy and
carefree. Vaughn's mother had left in the night to escape her husband's viciousness, promising to return as soon as possible for her ten-year-old son. She died before returning to claim him. Vaughn's father had immediately sent him away to school, not caring what became of Vaughn. After almost twenty years, Vaughn returns to ensure his ownership of Kirkaldy. He fears it will be made a wedding gift to his father's fiancee. Vaughn has heard unsavory rumors about the young woman and plans to keep her from attaining his mother's final gift to him. Gossip and lies have taken everything from Elisa, including her young son. Her late husband's family took the child from her, believing Elisa unfit after her lover killed her husband. Elisa is shunned by everyone except Rufus Wardell. Rufus agrees to find her son who has been hidden away. Elisa, in gratitude, agrees to marry him. Then, Vaughn Wardell returns home, putting Elisa's plans in jeopardy. She tries to think of her son, to stay on her course, but she is drawn to the handsome, brazen young man. This attraction could cost her not only her son, but her life as well. This story flows beautifully. Some things aren't as they appear in this story. There are lots of twists and surprises. The reader is given just enough information to keep you wanting more without giving away too much. The ending was an unexpected surprise. I don't believe things like that happened in England in 1835. It was perfect. This is one to read.
