Evelina is twenty-five years old. She has lived in a castle in Ireland with her grandfather Abram Griffin since the death of her parents. It has been a lonely life for Evelina and she is thinking it is time to move to the big city where she can be around people her age. Unknown to her this cannot happen for she is, 'The Chosen One'. She was born a child of prophecy and it is the servants living in the castle's responsibility to guard and protect her. Evelina has grown close to the handsome gardener, Gray. She feels she can at least have a fling with him while thinking about moving, but someone else thinks differently. Alrik Rath is a vampire that has the duty of guarding Evelina. He desires her and takes to visiting her in her dreams. Evelina begins to think the dreams are too real and either she is losing her mind or the castle is haunted. When the truth is revealed she must accept all she believes is a lie and that life will never be the same. It will be up to Rath to protect her from the evil that is coming.

Fortress by Flesa Black is an interesting concept of a vampire as a guardian. Each character has a surprise for the reader. One thing is deciding who they are, or should I say what they are? Evelina is an adventurous female, at least in her dreams. She has the most erotic experiences with what she considers a figment of her imagination. Although magic happens all around her she fails to see it as what it is. It is explained in the story, that since she grew up with magic, she does not notice anything out of the ordinary, but she did go to college. Has she really been this unobservant? Another question about the story is what exactly does 'The Chosen One,' have to do with keeping everyone alive. This may be explained in further stories in the series. It is explained about all she inherits but not its intended use. The romance is passionate and based on two characters drawn together through their loneliness. The chemistry is explosive and described through very stimulating and graphic details. The dialogue is well written and successfully explains the thoughts and emotions of the characters. The author does a good job of conveying the sense of loneliness throughout the story for Evelina, Rath, and Gray. An ancient castle in Ireland seems to be a good symbol for a vampire and a sense of timelessness is gained from this that serves as a reminder of the lonely life of Rath.

Refuge Book 1: The Fortress is sure to be enjoyed by lovers of paranormal romance, for the castle has become a refuge for all types of creatures and I can see many adventures in the future.
