| Clay Putnam returns from work on the family ranch to find a woman in the house other than his ailing mother. Seems brother Ty has sent his future wife, Paige, home to meet his family without coming along. He’s all tied up on the rodeo circuit. Clay tries to do the honorable thing and play host to his future sister-in-law but the attraction he and Paige feel for one another might not be controllable.
The writing duo known as Jamie Craig has given us an excellent tale of a family’s love. This is actually the first of two books. I read the second, Fortune’s Return, before this one and just had to know more. In this tale the author has built a modern day cowboy story minus the shoot ‘em up gun play and saloons. It has everything else anyone who enjoys westerns would want. The honor, the love for the land, the respect for others, the hard working, hard loving cowboys are all here. The main characters, Clay and Paige struggle to remain true to themselves with lust and attraction pulling them in a different direction. Ty is pictured as a typical youngest son. He’s doing what he wants, wanting to do the right thing but, somehow, always manages to do just what he thinks is best for himself, whatever the consequences. The details about the generations that came before to build this family are enough to show us what makes their reality. Whatever happens, family comes first, last and always. Great dialogue, scenery and interactions make this a powerful story. It’s easy to read, naturally flowing from scene to scene. I hope Jamie Craig continues this series.
