| Grace Wilkins testified against her former lover and has been hiding her past for three years. She built a new life in the Tennessee mountains, engaged to Connor Thomas, a lawyer with political aspirations. Connor breaks the engagement when he finds out about her past. It could be a liability - Grace was almost a prostitute- but he wouldn’t mind maintaining their physical relationship.
Max Clayton escaped the courtroom after his conviction, using an innocent female spectator as a shield. And he’s been killing off those who testified against him. Tyler Sandford is trying to track Max down. He wants to avenge the pregnant woman who was grabbed, and then murdered, when Max escaped. He has come to the town of Foxfire as a veterinarian, knowing Grace Wilkins presence will bring Max there sooner or later. The physical attraction between Tyler and Grace is strong, surprising them both. Grace figures her previous bad luck with men means she should give up on them. Tyler was not expecting a woman as compassionate, or as beautiful, as Grace. The small, supposedly safe town of Foxfire is well-described. The Knoxville Knifer is killing women in the nearby big city. Adam Shockley, the descendent of Foxfire’s founders, is somewhat strange and attracted to Grace. Her next-door-neighbor Brad has become her surrogate grandfather and Brad’s longtime girlfriend Harri sees auras and has visions. Grace is headstrong and feisty, but also tenderhearted and caring. Tyler’s skills as a vet demonstrate his sensitive nature. These are believable and likable characters. Erhardt truly makes us care about the individuals she has created. The author skillfully reveals the details of the story along the way. Issues of trust are explored, and the older characters of the novel are also allowed a little romance. The conclusion is action-packed and dramatic. This is a real page-turner.
