| Elise Haley put her life on hold nine years before when she came back home from college to Windy Flats, Texas, pregnant and alone. Now, instead of being the vet she always hoped to be, she acts as a receptionist in her brother's vet clinic. Needing more help, Justin decides to bring in a new vet as a partner...the one man Elise had hoped never to meet again, Liam Barton. The roommate to Elise's loser college boyfriend, Liam's support and one shared night had meant everything to her back then. It's a good thing that she's close to a delayed graduation, in another field, and ready to move out of town. If she can keep her hands off of Liam long enough to pack.
When I first started this book, I thought it was going to be another "she-got-pregnant-and-never-told-him" story. But it isn't. It is so very much better than that old cliché plot could ever be. Elise is a strong character that has been through more than anyone, even those in her family, could understand. Liam has not had an easy life either. While Elise's dream is to finish school and move away from the small, gossipy Texas town, Liam has moved to the town to escape his past and find a new life...along with a home, wife and family he's always craved. Their lives seem to be going in opposite directions and neither has the right answer. The book has ups, downs, and twists and just when you think there might be a happy ending for this pair, things go from bad to disastrous for all of them, including her brother Justin, his family, and their pre-mature infant son. Liam's wrongly imposed past has caught up with him and threatens to destroy his career. Elise is forced to watch as her brother's dreams die as surely as her own had done. Both have big decisions to make about their future. The situations and twists make this a very unique story and one I can recommend highly.
