| Captain Chasidah Bergren has spent her last few weeks on the penal colony of Moabar. Infamous for it’s icy climate and plague-virus, Moabar has become the preferred form of punishment among her people. While a person in theory could develop immunity to the plague, they could never become immune to the cold. Survival on Moabar is unheard of; and for Chaz, sent there for a crime she didn’t commit and stripped of her command, she is determined to free herself. It isn’t surprising that all who know Chaz think a sentencing to Moabar is certain death. That is why Chaz can’t help but wonder why her enemy, Gabriel Ross Sullivan, appears as she is making her escape. More confusing, rather than turning her in, he helps her and assures her that she can trust him. Things begin making sense when Sully tells Chaz of the illegal operations happening at distant gen-labs. It appears that the Empire has resumed the illegal breeding of jukors, a deadly, genetically created killer. Many innocent beings, human and otherwise, are being killed in the process, and Sully needs Chasidah’s skill as a captain to ferry a ship from Moabar to the gen-labs. But the journey is a long one, and Chaz doesn’t know if she can trust Sully with her life or her heart “Gabriel’s Ghost” is an exciting, space adventure with a lot of emotional ups and downs. The otherworldly creatures that populate Chasidah’s world add authenticity to this space romp and make for a great read. The character of Chaz is drawn with believability. She isn’t simply a fierce captain whose struggle to free herself has evolved into a struggle to free her world of evil, but she is also a human with human weaknesses. She sometimes feels vulnerable and often questions herself and her feelings. Still, she is always ready to act. With sexy Sully at her side, and his team of men, Chaz is unstoppable. Overall, “Gabriel’s Ghost” was a fantastic story to read. As with “Wintertide” Megan Sybil Baker has outdone herself again.
