| Lauren, recovering from a failed relationship, accepts her friend
Sara's invitation to a wicked Halloween party on a newly restored boat
from the Antebellum period in the south. Her friend tells her that she
will meet "someone who will rock her world tonight." With this
expectation, she sets out to find that someone but her violent
ex-boyfriend, who'd ended their relationship by having sex with
another woman, finds her first, dressed appropriately as an
executioner.
Fortunately, she is rescued by a charming and handsome man dressed as an old world Southern gambler and rogue. Convinced he's the one meant to "rock her world", she enjoys a delicious night with him. But the night isn't without its surprises. Ashton, her gambler, isn't quite what he seems and the executioner doesn't scare easily. Ms. Brennan's short work offers a solid story along with enough sex to delight any fan of erotic romance. She did a good job of creating a realistic setting and her characterization was impressive. The emotional investment of the reader is well established and the hero is so well crafted that it would be impossible not to feel the heat of his desire and know the depth of his feelings right along with the heroine. His dialogue lacked the occasional awkwardness of the heroine's and was dead on perfect. The hero was indeed a treat. This story comes with a disclaimer that it contains violence that may be disturbing to some. While it does contain violence, it was appropriate for the story. That being said, I'd like to have had a little more information on motivation of the ex-boyfriend who seemed mindlessly intent on revenge for reasons the reader is left to guess at. Overall, this story was a very entertaining read with a great twist at the end. It was a true Halloween story as opposed to a story with some Halloween elements thrown in and the author's talent is apparent in her ability to offer a unique gem of a story that isn't dominated by sensual scenes. I'll look forward to reading more of this author's work and recommend this as a great story for Halloween or any other time.
