One of the Gargoyle Protectors has placed a front-page ad in every major metropolitan newspaper in the Western world and Africa, seeking ebony beauties with wing-shaped birthmarks. Although the method is bizarre, the older Protectors agree to participate in interviews in order to screen for potential fledglings. Aman Jacobs of the Bronx is a thirty-two-year old African-American Rubenesque with attitude. She helped raise and support her younger brother and sister and for her thirtieth birthday, the two siblings combined to pay her tuition so she could acquire a bachelor's degree and then teach.

Aman wants none of the drama men bring, nor kids or disease. She is quite content on her own, and finds the ad utterly hilarious--despite the fact that she sports such a birthmark herself.

Sergei, a Protector, unintentionally collides with Aman in the lobby of his building as she is delivering parcels, and for each of them, lightning might as well have struck. Aman can't believe her pulse is pounding over an older man, an older white man, but she can't deny the attraction. Neither can he, and he goes from an offer of courtship straight to making it so.

Nia Foxx delivers an appealing tale of the paranormal with characters the reader can really applaud, and an intriguing plot line. Many readers will find characteristics in Aman with which they can identify, and the secondary characters such as her friend Samantha are well-drawn also. The ironic humour which laces throughout the story just adds to the already high appeal. Reader, this one is recommended; it works fine as a stand-alone, but read the entire series to up your pleasure in the tales.
