Waking to find his people massacred, Gaven becomes suspicious when, as the only survivor, he his taken to the enemy camp. The hated Masarians have attacked again, this time it seems with the intention of capturing him. When he is taken to the mighty general and introduced as his son, Gaven fears the mentality of his enemy. But his ‘Father' simply gives him to Vlar, a mighty Finnarian warrior, for training. Gaven is not stupid. He knows escape isn't going to be easy but he must get away from people he has grown to know as his enemy.

Vlar left his land long ago following a dream. He has worked and lived with the Masarians for many generations but now it seems his life is complete. Gaven is everything he dreams of. All he has to do is convince the boy they are not the enemy.

Gaven is an amazing boy he has an ability to accept what he can't change even when his heart finds it difficult to forgive or forget and has a moral code of honour that far exceeds what's expected of him. He, in turn, gains the respect and friendship of some of his father's men, if not his father. The world Ms. Owens has built for her characters is historical in nature, complete with a warlord who is hard, even on the son he has spent years trying to rescue. The characters are full and loveable and it would be lovely to see some of the unmated males find love. As the first book, this is the basis for the series and describes the places and people with a clarity that allows you to picture exactly what is happening and anticipate the later books.
