Karl Vance is half a world away from everything that means anything to him, namely Maria Ricardi. The Thorn is using him for his skills as a hit man to kill a rogue sorcerer gathering followers for his own nefarious purposes. When things go bad, Karl will do anything necessary to make his way back to Boston and Maria. Maria has her own problems to face. The problems she deals with as head of her family's crime syndicate pale in comparison to the threats from other paranormal creatures. She needs Karl home and maybe together they can face the danger together.

This book starts off bouncing between Karl's and Maria's perspectives. Having each chapter focus on only one of the main characters and the problems they're facing really highlights the physical distance separating them. The fact that neither Karl nor Maria can keep their mind off the other illustrates the depth of their caring for each other. Their time together is very touching as it is only when they are alone that they allow their tenderness to surface. But even when they are not alone, it is still evident to everyone around how deeply they care for each other as each is willing to do anything to keep the other safe, especially in the increasingly violent and dangerous situation they find themselves facing.

Keith Melton has written a fast paced, extremely bloody book full of danger and death. It is definitely not for the faint hearted or those with weak stomachs as it is full of the graphic imagery of violent and bloody death. Though this is the second book in the Nightfall Syndicate series, it is not necessary to have read the first book beforehand. This book can be enjoyed on its own, but readers may miss some of the undercurrents if they have not read the first book. This story flows well and will keep readers turning the pages until the very end. The ending has a few twists and will leave readers anxious for the next installment in the series.
