Even though Violet has been raised as a peasant in the small village of Terferill her aunt and uncle as well as everyone else in the village knows she possesses great gifts. Her Uncle Alban knows that it won't be long before the other villages learn of Violet and that there village is the only one that isn't going hungry. He also worries that the Empress will learn of Violet as well and that could cause harm to come to her. He worries mount when Prince Jovan stumbles upon Violet and is instantly drawn to her. However, Violet doesn't worry for her safety. The only thing she knows is that since minute she first saw him her desire for Jovan only deepens more and more. And it doesn't take Violet long to realize he is her mate.

Empress Delphine knows her powers are slowly dying she can no longer keep the land fertile. But she refuses to give up her kingdom. She realizes she must force Jovan to marry someone of her choosing and then she can rule from the shadows. When Jovan informs her he has met his bride and informs his mother that Violet possesses Elan's Gift, Delphine not only is angry that she's a mere peasant but she consumed with jealousy that she possesses so much power. Even though she tells Jovan she's happy about the union she orders Violet's death.

Even though I did like the Gift of Elan I was disappointed with the ending. I was really wrapped up in the story and it was almost as if the author just stopped writing. The characters were interesting and the storyline was great, but I do believe she could've done so much more with The Gift of Elan.
