Ten years ago Katie Buick and Richard Emerson had a serious encounter while in high school. Now, Katie, who was known as “the girl most likely to have fun” is trying very hard to change her profile and move ahead with her life. The trouble is that her idea of a career change meets with overwhelming opposition and nobody will loan her money to open her healthy choices fast food restaurant. However, Ric has changed from the nerd to a hunk and from middle class to a millionaire. The two sets of parents have been friends for Katie’s and Ric’s entire lives. Katie’s parents suggest that she ask Ric to finance her endeavor. Unfortunately, Katie had never apologized for embarrassing Ric in high school in front of several of her friends when she laughed at him for asking her to the prom.

Katie met with Ric in his office and explained her idea for “Pick and Choose,” a mid-scale restaurant downtown. He refused to loan her the money, but wanted to go into a partnership. While Katie did not approve, she really had no choice. Ric was to write the checks and do the business side of the enterprise while Katie was to handle the creative and food endeavors. Throughout the entire book, Katie and Ric were both attracted to each other and frustrated. They had a myriad of conflicts and fights during the partnership; Katie was afraid to explain to him why she was so anti “business and pleasure” mixing. This caused even more discord.

The business skyrocketed and business was great! The more the restaurant outdid expectations and the more the couple was attracted to each other, then the more they ended up quarrelling. Ric pursued; Katie ran! It became an explosive situation.

Ms. Donna Alward, author, did a superb job of writing this story. It was compelling and I really had a hard time putting it down. The book left me wanting to know more and trying to find other books by Ms. Alward. You will definitely not be disappointed if you read this book!
