When Caelius inherits his uncle's gladiators, he's dismayed to find both the men and the facility in deplorable shape. While he doesn't enjoy the games in the arena, Caelius realizes that his political aspirations require his participation. As he inspects his new possessions, one man catches his eye. Gaidres was taken from his homeland and his lover killed by Caelius' uncle. He sworn to kill all in the man's family line. Now that Caelius is near, Gaidres sees his chance at vengeance. But things become very complicated when Gaidres is called to his master's chamber. Caelius doesn't want to take but to be taken. Their connection is apparent and Gaidres is confused by his feelings. Caelius is no ordinary Roman and Gaidres is no longer sure of his need for revenge.

This is a really well written m/m historical romance with a bit of a twist. Most historical portrayals of a an m/m relationship must deal with the social and cultural stigmas attached to such relationships and thus most exist in secrecy. In this story, it's not the sexual relationship that is endangers Caelius and Gaidres but the emotional one. True feelings between master and slave are dangerous and unacceptable. The characters are strong and multi-dimensional. Neither are defined by their lot in life. They defy convention both in their private and professional lives. Gaidres' emotions are deeply ingrained as is his hatred. Although sexually attracted to his master, Gaidres refuses to consider it has any other meaning. His reserve is slowly stripped away by his lover's honesty and integrity. Caelius is an honorable man and not afraid to go after what he wants. The sex is incredibly hot, sometimes motivated by anger, sometimes by pure lust. The scenes are vividly descriptive without being overdone or tawdry. The relationship becomes something more than sexual but not easily or without angst. Supporting characters add texture to the story as does a few well placed subplots. The stunning conclusion is partially based on a actual event. It is almost overwhelming in scope. Simply one of the most exciting and intense scenes I've read in quite some time. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and highly recommend it anyone who loves a good m/m romance.
