| Queen Catherine of Echosea is devastated after losing the war to her archenemy, Queen Gloriana of Albion. In a last attempt to save her country and her people, she disguises herself as a maid and goes to her nemesis to beg for mercy. However, she was not counting on being charmed and seduced by this robust Queen, and falling in love with her bed -- and her heart. Finally understanding their differences, Queen Catherine must now find a way to enlighten Queen Gloriana in the way of love and find peace for both their reigns, before her true identity is revealed.
This was a very interesting story. I really liked the plot, for it gave me a different perspective on how to look at a storyline involving rather common subjects such as medieval wars and royal disputes. More, the whole underlying tension between these two magnificent women, who handle power and governance in very different ways, only adds to the uniqueness of this story. Catherine's character is very dynamic, but I thought Gloriana's character lacked greatly in development. I was very intrigued in trying to figure out her personality, when suddenly it is all clear through Catherine's musings, which didn't really help me like Gloriana very much, since all the things Catherine sees in her aren't that apparent to the reader. Also, we see Catherine falling in love, but not Gloriana, which in turn didn't help me be convinced by the ending. More, the pacing of the story was sort of awful. For instance, there were some very complicated conflicts and obstacles in the story that had the potential to become exciting and critical scenes, but they fell way short of that, being resolved with no real trouble instead. Thus, while this story has an intriguing and unique storyline, it didn't really live up to its true potential.
