| Daniel is a captain in the Riceland Texas police department. He's gay but in the closet. Mark is gay and out. They meet at the scene of a shooting in which Mark is involved. Daniel is instantly attracted to Mark, but doesn't know what to do about it. There are so many things against them coming together. Daniel doesn't know if he can come out to be with Mark and Mark has a past that could get in the way of them ever having a future. Will they be able to overcome the obstacles to have a future together?
This story is told mainly from Daniel's point of view and while it does add a different take to the story, it is rather dark and depressing. His character just did not come off as likeable he was very self involved and at times I wanted to say "enough whining already move on with your life." Because of this, the story moved very slowly. The author could have taken out the first half of the book and kept the second half and had a really good story but she just spent too much time on Daniel in the beginning. The story jumps back and forth to the past smoothly enough. But based on the history in the book, it makes the story line between Daniel and his parents somewhat unbelievable, especially at the end. I did like the Mark but I wish he hadn't been relegated to almost a secondary character because his story and background was so much more interesting. I also like the character of the chief of police, he added some humor to an otherwise depressing story. Overall, I can't say that I would recommend this book, while the story had some good points, the bad far outnumber the good.
