| Jake McKenna tries to avoid drama whenever possible. He prefers spending his time with planes, especially his grandfather's World War II fighter plane Betty Sue preparing for an upcoming race. Acting as chauffer and rent-a-date to Lauren Matthews, the new stepdaughter of his sister's boss is not in his plans. Lauren is nothing like he expects when he gives in to his sister's request and picks her up from the airport. He finds himself drawn to her warmth and humor and she seems equally drawn to him and his fierce sense of loyalty. Their immediate connection helps ground the now Washington-free Lauren as she seeks to understand her mother's elopement.
Jake and Lauren are both wonderfully written characters who will suck readers right into their story. The sparks fly between them from the moment they meet and only get hotter the longer they're around each other. All of the sex scenes sizzle and really show off the passion that simmers just below the surface throughout the whole story. The relationship between Jake and Lauren is also a great foil for the relationship between her mother and Arlen. All the heat that is apparently missing between the newly eloped couple flares between Jake and Lauren, which is one of the reasons Lauren wonders about the true nature of her mother's relationship. The whole story flows nicely from the moment Lauren lands in Colorado. The pace gradually increases as the story moves forward to the somewhat unexpected conclusion. All of the mysterious and somewhat threatening events will keep readers guessing as Jake and Lauren, along with some help from Jake's sister Ruby Jean, try to figure out who is behind them. This story does a good job of showing just how well some secrets can be kept even in small towns. Donna Kauffman has written a thoroughly enjoyable story filled with great characters. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a little mystery thrown in with some hot romance.
