| All Tracy Dixon did was make a phone call to tell the owner she'd found her lost dog. In return she receives an invitation to a party filled with celebrities. The next morning the police are knocking at her door believing she may have been involved in theft of the Broadway star's jewelry and attempted murder. Things go from bad to worse when she finds out her brother has been involved in an accident he may not survive. She ran from her hometown with her reputation in shreds, now she has to return with even worse hanging over her head. Will the Chief of Police, Leif Erickson, help her prove her innocence or lock her away when the missing jewels are found in her car?
Jan Washburn pens an intense tale of a woman holding on while the world seems to be crashing around her head. The nasty villain seems to have everything set up for Tracy to take the fall for his crimes. He hasn't counted on a Chief of Police willing to give her the benefit of the doubt by following his instincts. Tracy, Leif, or Leland to his aging secretary, and most of the people in the town of Allerton are wonderful characters. Leif's two nephews, Mark and Luke, shine as children usually do in the midst of the turmoil the adults around them are lost in. Maggie, Tracy's best friend, is the kind of friend anyone would cherish. The minister and congregation at Leif's church are wonderful people with the exception of Sheila. We can't help but smirk a little when her plan to hurt Tracy's reputation backfires in a unique way. This is a well crafted suspense with plenty of romance to keep the pages turning as quickly as we can to find out what happens. Ms. Washburn writes well and I look forward to reading more from her.
