When Lisa MacDougall unexpectedly inherits her Uncle Lon's property in Ben Lomond, N.C., she views it as a chance to escape her predatory employer, Andrei Romanoff, and as a chance to make a start for herself. Lisa is a gemologist, eerily connected to the stones she so loves. Her inheritance will take that connection and develop it into a veritable force of nature.

Marco Santiago and Saul Ramirez are DEA agents, partnered for years, and hot on the trail of Manuel Norda. Finding and bringing Norda to justice has been Marco's goal since he watched Norda, as a child, kill his mother and grandmother. Protected from the event by his grandmother's earth powers, he has spent the intervening years developing his own talents and abilities. But evil is tenacious and hard to overcome. It will take a combination of power, wisdom and love to have a chance to defeat this enemy..

When Lisa comes to Ben Lomond, she finds that her inheritance includes an incredible emerald. Not only is it huge, and flawless; to her confusion, it talks to her. Green Fire, it burns with a cold fire, strengthening her connection to the earth's forces. Her great-grandmother's diary points the way to obtaining mastery as a lithomancer. Her great-grandmother's spirit, provides instruction, (and entertainment), as Lisa faces a whirling triad of evil, lust, and murder.

It is an understatement to say that this book is a page turner. Ms. Michaels has created a bold, detailed plot with action, intrigue, mystery and romance. She has not avoided the intricate workings of evil....showing the depravities of both Romanoff and Norda with stunning force. Nor has she allowed the heroine to prosper with anything less than full control of herself and her power. Love is too simple a word to define the relationship preordained between Marco and Lisa, as their relationship and powers grow in conjuction with each other. A soul-mating is not always the most comfortable of relationships to find yourself in, and Ms. Michaels neither overplays nor understates the difficulties the two find in their growing communion.

I highly recommend this book for all readers who want action, romance, with a mystical sense of powers beyond merely human. Ms. Michaels promises, and delivers an engrossing read.
