| Niahian is a desert world that has very little water. Centuries ago, there was a cataclysmic event that caused global devastation of horrific proportions. This was followed by a global war that devastated what was left. Centuries later, the people have went backwards in time to a tribal system. Most of the technology and knowledge has been lost, and the "Keeper of Knowledge" keeps what remains, doling out what they think is required. In order to survive, the people have become tribal and more primitive. But prophecy has foretold that when the planets align, there will be a great upheaval, and water will come rushing back. First, one man must find the Storm, guard it well, and take it to the temple of Zoe. Kiran is the chosen one. He sets out to find the Storm, and in the process finds Tempest. Tempest is an earthling whose ship had crash-landed on the planet many years before. She was born on Niahian, and raised in the earth colony. When a devastating illness runs through the colony and kills almost everyone there, she is forced to go live on her own next to a small pool of water in the desert. When Kiran arrives at her little oasis, she decides that after two years of living there by herself, she no longer wants to be alone. She follows Kiran on his quest. In the end, Kiran finds out that she is the Storm that he is supposed to guard. He also finds that the hardest thing to guard her from is himself.
Guardian of the Storm is a breathtaking read. Tempest is an engaging character, and Kiran is fascinating. The story moves along a good pace, and I was engaged the whole time. The only disappointment was the somewhat abrupt way the book was ended. I really enjoyed this book, and I hope to read more of this authors work.
