Marci Sky is to be a substitute bridesmaid for her college friend's wedding. By coincidence, her grandmother, the late film star Barbara Tallant was from the area. There is a mystery about how she lost her parents and came to be adopted and this is the perfect opportunity for the historian to research her family history. She also has a job interview nearby shortly after the wedding. Felicity's cousin Rick is a mixed pleasure. He is very handsome and attracted to her, but wound very tight and very suspicious of Marci. The wedding could be interesting, if Marci survives it.

This is a novel filled with bizarre characters and a Depression-era mystery. The family at the Grange is at best odd and at worst harboring a murderer or two. I enjoyed the sexual tension between Rick and Marci, but not his vacillating attitude towards her. He is so wrapped up in protecting his family and their assets, that he has a hard time seeing Mari's point of view and it almost gets her killed. Marci is a tenacious character determined to get to the bottom of her own family mystery. Rick's family is a strange bunch, all spoiled and dependent on Rick. Jizzelle is particularly strange, friendly one minute and hostile the next. Jean and Emma are just vague, but Rick has a pretty strange group to take care of. The plot is very easy to follow and the glimpses the author gives us into the past really help explain things. The romance between Rick and Marci is sensual and fraught with tension, adding to the suspenseful atmosphere. The author wraps everything up nicely with a very exciting climax.
