| Strange things happen at the Forked River Ranch! Bryce LaCroix made a big mistake crossing their land; how was he to know that he would be greeted at gunpoint by the daughter, Hannah Faraday, of the owner, Ernie Faraday. Ernie had fallen from a horse and broken his back soon after his only son, Kirk, had run away twelve years before. Since Ernie was in a wheelchair, Hannah was required to run the thousands of acres ranch and their employees. Funny thing though—all their employees were “slow” and, when they were treated fairly, they were wonderfully loyal.
Old man Faraday was rough on Hannah; he ruled her with ridicule and chauvinistic ways! Hannah took Bryce home with her, because he was on their property and she wanted him to be the father of the baby that her Papa said she must have. They argued, but eventually Bryce was ordered to do as he was told and ‘do his job and get Hannah with child.’ He was able to escape once; wish I could tell you what happened! And then, on top of all these happenings, Kirk came home and decided to take over. He dismissed the young man, Tommy, who had constantly taken care of Ernie, and said that he would heal his father. As far as Ernie was concerned, Kirk could do no wrong; Tommy was devastated, and Bryce and Hannah were suspicious. Kirk had never been to war as his family thought; he was a paid boy toy to rich men. When he received an offer he could not refuse, Kirk ordered Tommy to continue giving his dad the (tainted) medicine until he returned. This invitation led to a few male/male scenes which were very descriptive. A quite graphic, gory scene or two that I was not expecting really shocked me! These did not dominate the story; rather, they impacted the plot and were, I assume, necessary. To say the story had a surprising ending would be an understatement! I really enjoyed the book and the study of the various characters. I recommend this book highly!
