| Devin is a Florida psychic who has unaccountably tuned into the spirit of a murdered Flapper Girl from the Roaring Twenties. The anniversary of the woman’s death eighty years ago is near, and apparently her spirit is acting up also; or perhaps it’s just Devin’s increased sensitivity. However, even psychic Devin appears to miss the clues when the ghost materializes and speaks directly to her. Devin’s grandmother had promised her that the psychic gift would become clear to her eventually; but Devin seems to have overlooked its actual nature. Once Devin does realize that her newly-met friend on St. Augustine’s Halloween Ghost Tour is not an out-of-fashion tourist, but an actual ghost of a woman dead for seventy-eight years, she gets into the spirit, so to speak, when ghost Roxy enlists her help to discover who murdered Roxy-and just why!
I found the premise of Haunted Hearts intriguing but I felt that the story needed some additional revision. It was difficult for me to suspend my disbelief when I realized so quickly that the heroine, supposedly psychic, is actually rather self-involved, distracted, and clueless in the face of what is a genuine psychic event. In addition, I had some concerns with errors that were sufficient to make for a significant distraction from the otherwise good flow of the story. Linn Random does background description of the locale and history of the city of St. Augustine very admirably.
