Beth Albright is a paranormal investigator. She is hired to do a study of a house that she knows all too well and is not happy to find that the corporation who hired her is none other than the man who dumped her for no reason five years ago. Sam Aston-Wilkes is required by the terms of his mother’s will that a paranormal investigation be done of the house. His estranged father is counting on his not doing it, as he does not believe in ghosts. Sam is shocked that Beth is the investigator hired to do the job, but has no time to hire another and in his heart he really does not want to. He does not regret sending Beth away all those years ago, but he has missed her terribly, even putting her in the mystery novels that he writes. Beth has two tasks now; first she must determine if the Grange is haunted, secondly she must find out why Sam sent her away.

Ms Raymond has created a classic ghost story here. Two lovers separated by a mistake are brought together by the investigation and get a second chance to work out the past, unlike the ghosts in the house. The house is perfectly described for this story. It is an unhappy place with lots of unresolved problems just like Sam and Beth. The ghosts definitely want to be heard, seen and felt, particularly at the end. Sam and Beth are very vivid characters and are very vividly described, as is Fergus the cat. The others are very peripheral, but described just as well. I really enjoyed reading this story; it was a very enjoyable love story and ghost story.
