| Camilla (Cami) Harrison, aged 18, needed a way to pay for college. Her parents did not have a lot of money so their solution was for her to get a job. She did! She joined the Army. Both of her parents were shocked that she would do such a thing without consulting them first. And her “intended,” Trevor, was almost mad! He had worked with his dad and had a good prospect for his future. His parents were very well off, financially, and he could not believe that was the only way Cami could afford to go to college.
Since she was a Christian and wanted to serve God as well as serve, she chose to become a chaplain’s assistant. After basic and advanced training, she was assigned to Fort Huachuca, Arizona where she met Nathan Porter who would become her best friend and confident. He also was a Christian and planned to become a youth minister after he completed his military service. As he and Cami drew closer, they realized they were truly soul mates, but Cami had dated, and knew she would marry, Trevor for three years! They each were content with their relationship until Trevor proposed to Cami. That changed everything! This story has it all—some funny parts (for example, Cami told Trevor not to worry about where they would live…she had requested stateside assignments)! There were also some very sad parts (like when Nathan left for Iraq after telling Cami he loved her). Confusion reigned in all the ups and downs Cami and Nathan (not to mention Trevor) lived through! Friendships abounded throughout the book—Jessica became Cami’s roommate after about a year and, also being committed to God, was able to become very close to both). This novel has strong characters who always kept the story moving; there were no bad parts to the story, and there were some real surprises toward the end! Ms. Mendoza has written an exceptional book about present-day military personnel and how they deal with life. It was an incredible book which I am pleased to recommend highly!
