| A tragic carriage accident has taken the parents of Catriona Hathaway and left her blind, unable to bear children, and under the care of her Uncle Frederick and Aunt Victoria. Led to believe she will be attending a special school for the blind, Catriona boards a carriage with her escort, Mrs. Otto. It isn't until the long uncomfortable journey ends that Catriona discovers she has not only been deceived about the special school but she has in fact been sold to Mrs. Otto for the purpose of pleasing men. Catriona is horrified by the mere thought but is powerless to stop her new fate.
Quintus Midnight is wealthy, distant to others, and thought strange because of the mask he wears. But Quintus is not an ordinary man. He senses painful emotions and feeds off of them, leaving his victims with a sense of relief and calmness. While walking through the streets one dark evening, an overwhelming sense of pain and fright settles within him. In searching for the bearer of these emotions, he finds Catriona. I found myself completely enchanted by HEART OF MIDNIGHT. If I had a complaint it would be that it ended too soon! I was instantly drawn to the character of Catriona, so much so that I could feel her pain and loss. Despite its shortness of 66 pages, I found I had no trouble getting into the story and enjoying every word of it. For a quick entertaining read I would recommend this novella.
