In Hearts in Darkness, Nikki and Michael are forced back together when an evil begins stalking people in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Nikki is working on a case of a missing boy, and gets into more than she bargained for. Michael finds out that if he doesn't take Nikki with him and help her, she will die. Michael has been fighting his blood lust for six months, and doesn't want to take the chance that he will feed from Nikki. He knows he has to help her, but he decides if he fights his feelings he can do that and leave. Nikki has gotten stronger psychic abilities since he seen her, and has decided that they should be together. But first, they need to find out what vampire is kidnapping rich men and killing them. Is it a vampire or something even more sinister?

Nikki is still the strong woman she was in the first book. I like her character a lot, because she takes a lot of abuse and gives it right back. In this installment, she is even better. She isn't scared to take a chance on love as she was before. In the first book, Nikki thinks that everyone she loves dies, and Michael doesn't want her that much anyway. Michael was the one that wanted to continue the relationship. In this one, it's Nikki. Michael has convinced himself that his job is to ugly and dark for Nikki to help him with, and is constantly trying to push her away. The confrontation kind of got old after a while, you just wish they would get on with it. Over all though, the story is highly entertaining. There were a lot of twists and turns, with non-stop action in this story. I would highly recommend the second in Keri Arthur's Vampire series, and look forward to reading the rest.
