Detective Nick Valenti is worried about his partner and lover Sean O'Brian. O'Brian had volunteered for an extremely dangerous job where he would have no back up. Even though Valenti begged him not to take it, O'Brian did anyway. Now after a month, he's not called in at the appointed time, and Valenti knows he's in trouble. The Captain is dragging his heels on the matter though, and isn't very helpful. Finally he agrees to let Valenti go in after O'Brian. What he finds is worse than he could have imagined.

There is no doubt about the love these two characters have for each other. They've been through a lot, but their love is undeniable. The author recommends you read the previous stories: The Assignment, I'll Be Hot for Christmas, and Fireworks before reading this, but I found the story completely satisfying. I am intrigued enough to look for the previous books starring these two police detectives. Their story is one that tugs at your heart. Fear of coming out, and fear of losing each other all conflict with how in love they are and how neither one wants to hurt the other. Even when forced into situations they have no control in.

Heart and Soul is a sweet story that is not for the faint of heart because of the violence, but it is a tremendous love story that I will definitely read again. Ms. Anderson has found a new fan.
