Langston Leed Monteith, the Black Monteith, returns to Scotland after years away to find his country barely surviving after the war. He has returned to clans struggling to save themselves and keep their honor as the ruthless Highland Rangers torment them. The Black Monteith is known throughout the Highlands as a traitor and is hated by all.

Lisle MacHugh is a war widow, as are a lot of the women in the Highlands. Since the war she has fought to keep her clan from starving but as of late it would seem she is losing the battle. Unti, she runs into the Black Monteith. He decides he wants her, not for just a night, but he intends to have her for life and offers to save her clan to get her. Can Lisle survive marriage to her enemy even to save her clan? Does she really have a choice?

Jackie Ivie has written a spellbinding story of hatred, lies, deceit, and love. I was immediately drawn into this wonderful tale by Lisle and Langston’s verbal sparring with each other. The conversations between these two characters were so involved and at times humorous. I found myself completely immersed in it. I also loved the way that things were never really as they seemed and several times found myself wondering if the Black Monteith truly were one of the bad guys. I loved this story and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a well-written, romance that will keep them on the edge of their seats, attempting to figure out just what is the truth.
