| Tyler Purcell is acting manager of his family’s failing hotel, the Weiss Strande Hotel, after his father has retired to fight a battle with cancer. As a last ditch effort to try to save the hotel, Tyler has gathered investors and is about to open a dance club in the hotel called the White Room.
Fortunately, Tyler has managed to book the incredibly popular band, Heaven Sent, for the grand opening. They also happen to be Tyler’s favorite band of all time. When they arrive to rehearse for the opening, Tyler discovers he has at least one passion in common with Johnny Heaven, the sexy and charismatic lead singer – they are both passionate gamers. Tyler is shocked when Johnny invites him to play Final Fantasy 10 with him but more shocked by his own attraction to Johnny. This is an absolutely terrific story with multiple complex levels of characters and situations. Tyler is a caring, warm person in his care for his father and desire to save the hotel. His history of lukewarm relationships and his lust for Johnny who he feels there’s no way he should be attracted to. I absolutely loved the way Jet Mykles challenges the reader to look beyond the typical black and white and ask questions of themselves even as the characters are doing so. What does it mean to be “straight” or “gay”. Why does it matter? Or does it matter at all? What does it mean to be a star or just a hotel manager? This is going firmly on my keeper shelf and I’ll probably read it again soon.
