| The building security tested an alarm just as Kara Porter was making off with some really fine jewels. Her father had always warned that if she stuffed the job and set of an alarm, she’d face the consequences alone because he’d be long gone. That’s exactly where he was when Kara was shot by a security guard. He’d never allowed her to go to school; she was sixteen with no education. Mr. Holt from ACORP offered her release from prosecution, an education, a home, and more training at what she liked to do best. She spent the next ten years at ACORP pushing herself to do her best before her father showed up again, this time as an enemy. She worked for ACORP, stealing their most priceless artifacts to show them the weak spots in their security. She started having competition at the thefts. Another team was always right behind her. The thief on the other team proved irresistible to Kara. Was she going to throw away everything she’d worked for because of a man who lived on the wrong side of the law?
This is a very good book. The main characters are well developed but Kara seems withdrawn and difficult to relate to at first. We eventually warm up to her as she warms up to friends TW., the computer technical guy and Stephanie, the electronics and gadgetry whiz. In the first half of the book, Kara’s character seemed very whiny and immature in her conversations with her love interest and criminal extraordinaire Lachlan Mitchell, making it difficult to like her and impossible to relate to her. She finally started acting more adult like the twenty-six year old woman she is when there was a job to do. Despite the initial difficulty relating to the heroine, we finally do get to know her and to know her is to love her. The plot is interesting and keeps the reader involved. Planning and executing the heists is very exciting and makes the book more than a great read. There are some plot twists that take the reader by surprise and change the whole foundation of the story. All in all, The Heist is a fun read and I highly recommend it.
