| As he lies dying from a gunshot wound, Brandy
Sinclair's father warns her that she's in terrible
danger. He reveals that Scott, her greedy
stepbrother, shot him. Brandy promises to leave for
the Colonies, where her father's friend will protect
her.
Immediately after her father's funeral, Brandy prepares to depart, but Scott has other plans. He brutally rapes Brandy and then sells her to slave traders. Brandy endures the difficult voyage across the ocean, and when the ship reaches New York, she attempts a daring escape. Captain Nick Tremaine, a notorious pirate, agrees to help the colonists in their struggle for independence. While in New York, he learns of a slave ship carrying a fortune in British pounds and plans to take it for the colonists. Posing as a slave buyer, he boards the ship and finds more than he bargained for. A beautiful slave is about to be punished for an escape attempt. Will he be able to carry out his mission and rescue the woman who has captivated his heart? This is a good story, but it has some problems that keep it from being great. There are a few times when certain details don't fit the time period or setting. Another problem occurs when the characters sustain terrible injuries and then recover too quickly and easily. It's not very believable and pulls you out of the story. Some readers might be disturbed by the graphic content in this book. It contains several scenes of cruelty and violence, including rape scenes. These scenes are integral to the plot, and the author handles them well. The author also does a great job with the characters. All the characters are wonderfully portrayed. I look forward to reading this author's next book.
