| It seems Angus, Adrien's assistant at the bookstore, has gone beyond just homework assignments for a class in the occult. He's getting threatening phone calls from members of a coven or cult at the store and feels his life is in danger. Adrien gives him some money and tells him to get away, hoping it will blow over. The calls continue and he returns to find a pentagram on his store. Never one to let others solve a mystery, Adrien gets involved to help track a serial killer who's been leaving dead bodies around Los Angeles with occult symbols carved on and around them.
Josh Lanyon continues this excellent series of Adrien English mysteries with another that keeps us guessing right up to the end. His characterization of Adrien as a self deprecating, humorous, never-give-up gay sleuth is always charming. Blended with the suspense are the antics of Lisa, Adrien's mother. She's getting married so Adrien has to play nice with his new family while trying to prevent murder and mayhem. In this book the relationship between Adrien and Jake is even rockier than in the past. Seems Jake has gotten the girlfriend he dates when he's not working or with Adrien pregnant. The author always seems to find a way to keep both the suspense and the humor moving at such a pace I don't want to put the book down. Well penned players help fill the storyline with tidbits of information, levity in the face of challenges or just plain nastiness. Josh Lanyon has become one of those authors whose books are a must read for me because of that superbly crafted blend of seriousness with humor no matter what the challenge facing the hero.
